I came in this morning to find that my middleclick wasn’t working to open a new tab in any browser. As this is soo deeply ingrained in my muscle memory it got annoying fast. I knew this wasn’t a browser setting as it didn’t work in any of my browsers, this left a windows setting as the culprit. Unfortunately for me I am using a Generic HID Compliant mouse driver which doesn’t have the luxury of a middle click option and I am using a generic Kensington mouse so I had no luck in control panel. Therefore the only option left to me was to uninstall and reinstall the mouse driver from device manager and reboot in the hope that windows would reinstall the driver automatically and the issue would be resolved. Upon reboot I got middle click back. If you want to do the same the steps are below:
- Click on Start->Right Click on My Computer and Click on Manage.
- When the Computer Management screen appears click on Device Manager in the left hand pane.
- Expand the Mice and other pointing devices sub-branch and right click on your mouse driver e.g. HID-Compliant Mouse and click on uninstall agreeing to any prompts.
- Warning after you have done this you will lose access to your mouse. Then press the windows key to get to shutdown/reboot and reboot your machine.
